Modern designs and high quality materials have increased the strength and practicality of both chain sling and steel wire rope sling and the new technology has increased the durability of chain slings. Therefore, both chain sling and steel wire rope sling have very close competition for lifting purposes up to 7.5 Tones.
Hoist manufacturers produce a wide spectrum of hoist using both chain sling and steel wire rope slings for lifting purposes of 0.5 to 7.5 tones. However, the number of chain sling decreases for loading over 7.5 tones and steel wire rope sling is basically the best and in some cases the only possible option.
An industrial survey has borne out that chain slings have some benefits to steel wire rope slings

However like we said before using steel wire rope slings in some cases is inevitable because
- Steel wire rope slings have a higher lifting speed.
- Steel wire rope hoists have better and more options
- They are practically the only option for heavy lifting over 8 tones.
The most imperative difference between chain sling and steel wire rope sling is their working mechanism. Chain hoists bag the chain while lifting in a designated bag, while, the redundant steel wire rope is twisted around a drum while lifting in steel wire rope hoists.
